Explosives Camp 2013

The New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMTech) is offering its summer camp in explosives. Through lectures, field demonstrations, hands-on exercises and field trips, twenty students will learn how explosives are used safely, how they are made and how to use them effectively in industry as well as other applications. Together with the Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center, (EMRTC), NMTech is a leader in the research, development, testing and evaluation of energetic materials. For over 50 years NMTech has been educating and training world-class explosives and mining professionals. The professional staff members are all experts in their fields with explosive credits seen on the Discovery Channel, TLC, Popular Mechanics Kids, History Channel, and Myth Busters.

Explosives and energetic materials are used in many areas of industry including welding, agricultural and consumer products, demolition, compaction of soils, and mining. EMRTC created Explosives Camp to give high school students a heads up in career choices the explosives world has to offer. Throughout our week-long course, students will participate in lectures, demonstrations, and field trips. They will learn safety in the handling of explosives, perform experiments and see up close how explosives affect our everyday lives and how students can become a part of it.

How Can I Be Selected? Twenty students will be chosen for Explosives Camp and they will see firsthand how energetic materials might be their career choice for the future. All you have to do to qualify is send us the following before May 15th, 2013:

Explosives Camp's First Priority is Safety. Each day's activities begin with a lecture by a prominent instructor currently working in the explosives field. Proper safety and handling of the particular explosives being used are fully covered giving students the confidence needed to perform the afternoon's explosive tests. Field demonstrations are performed at EMRTC's 41-square mile field laboratory.

How Much Does it Cost? Each student pays $1300 which includes one week of single occupancy room and board at NMTech, a gym pass, a student center pass, transportation to and from field trips and lots of NMTech swag like a t-shirt, cap, notebook and clipboard. A limited number of scholarships will be awarded. Student deposit checks should be made payable to New Mexico Tech. All checks will be held until Jun 12, 2013. Applicants not accepted will have their deposit returned. Accepted students need to have the balance of their tuition paid in full before June 12, 2013. After June 12, 2013 selected students who cancel will pay a 50% cancellation fee.

Other information: The camp will include evening activities such as a cookout and a pool party. Residence hall assistants will be available in the student dormitories. A full list of rules and regulations for selected students will be given to the students and their parent/guardian.

Students are not allowed to have vehicles on campus.

On Saturday, June 22nd parents are invited to NMTech for lunch. Group photos will be taken, certificates will be awarded and student presentations will be made. Students can leave NMTech with a parent/guardian after lunch on Saturday.

When Will I Know If I Am Chosen? Notification of selected students will be made by email no later than May 31, 2013.
