The Southern Border Training and Technical Assistance Project is a training program being conducted by BORSEC under sponsorship of the Bureau of Justice Assistance, US Department of Justice. BORSEC represents New Mexico Tech on border violence task forces and working groups hosted by the US Border Patrol, the New Mexico Attorney General's Office, and the FBI. BORSEC also periodically coordinates foreign law enforcement conferences, workshops, and training for Mexican officials who have been sponsored by the US Government. BORSEC provides a vehicle for a variety of other organizations, such as the Conference of Western Attorneys General, to share their expertise with States on both sides of the International Border.
These initiatives include:
- Target Kidnapping & Paramilitary threats from MDTO & associated gangs
- Research border security threats and countermeasures
- Conduct training needs assessment in U.S. Southwest
- Conduct training for State, Local, and Tribal law enforcement officers on countering targeted threats
- 40 hour practical course at New Mexico Tech's Playas Training and Research Center (PTRC)
- 4 hour awareness course @ LEAs in the southwest
